What Is an IQP?

An IQP — Independently Qualified Person — is someone registered and certified to test backflow prevention devices. Under the Building Act 2004, only a registered IQP can carry out a valid backflow test that Auckland Council and Watercare will accept.

Not just any plumber can test a backflow device. You need someone who has completed the specific IQP training, holds current certification, and is registered with your local council. We're registered IQP testers and carry out backflow testing across all of Auckland.

Why You Need an IQP for Backflow Testing

Auckland Council and Watercare maintain a register of all backflow prevention devices installed in the region. Every device on that register must be tested annually by a registered IQP. The results are reported to council — and if your device hasn't been tested, you'll hear about it.

An IQP test isn't just a visual inspection. It's a pressure-based test using calibrated gauges that checks whether each check valve and relief valve in your device is working within specification. The test procedure follows Watercare's approved methodology, and the results are documented in a formal test report.

Council Requirements

Auckland Council requires backflow prevention devices to be tested:

Council sends reminder notices before your test is due. If you've received one, give us a call and we'll get it booked in before the deadline.

What Happens During an IQP Inspection

Here's what to expect when we come out to test your backflow device:

We Are Registered IQP Testers

Water & Gas Worx is registered as an IQP with Auckland Council. We test all types of backflow prevention devices — RPZ valves, DCVA, and testable dual check valves — across residential and commercial properties throughout Auckland.

We also handle the paperwork. After every test, we submit the results directly to council so you stay compliant without lifting a finger. If your device needs repairs, we sort that too — same visit where possible.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does IQP stand for?

Independently Qualified Person. It's a registration under the Building Act 2004 for people qualified to inspect and test specified systems — including backflow prevention devices.

Can any plumber test a backflow device?

No. Only a registered IQP can carry out a valid backflow test that council will accept. A regular plumber can install a device, but the annual compliance test must be done by an IQP.

How do I know if my property needs IQP testing?

If you have a backflow prevention device registered with Auckland Council, you need annual IQP testing. Council will send you reminder notices. If you're unsure, give us a call and we can check for you.

Do you submit the test results to council?

Yes — we handle all the paperwork. After testing, we submit the results directly to Auckland Council on your behalf. You'll also get a copy of the test report for your records.

What if my device fails the IQP test?

We can usually repair it on the same visit — we carry repair kits for common devices. If it needs replacing, we'll give you a price and get it sorted quickly so you're back in compliance.
