Backflow Device Repairs

When a backflow preventer fails its annual test, it needs to be repaired or replaced before council will sign off on compliance. We carry repair kits for the most common devices and can usually fix it on the same visit as the test — no second callout, no waiting for parts.

If your device has been flagged as failed, or it's visibly leaking or dumping water from the relief valve, give us a call. The sooner it's sorted, the sooner you're back in compliance.

Common Backflow Device Faults

• Check valve not sealing — The rubber disc or seat inside the check valve wears out over time. This is the most common reason for a failed test. Usually fixable with a repair kit — new seals, springs, and disc.
• Relief valve dumping water (RPZ) — If the relief valve on an RPZ is constantly dripping or dumping water, it means one or both check valves have failed. The relief valve is doing its job — protecting the supply — but the device needs repair.
• Corrosion and scale build-up — Older devices, especially in areas with hard water, can develop internal corrosion that prevents the check valves from seating properly. Sometimes a clean and rebuild works. Sometimes the body is too far gone and needs replacing.
• Damaged test ports — If the test cock fittings are damaged, stripped, or seized, the device can't be properly tested. We replace test cocks as part of any repair.
• Freeze or impact damage — Devices installed in exposed locations can suffer frost damage or physical impact. If the body is cracked, it's a replacement job.

Repair vs Replace

We always try to repair first — it's faster and cheaper. But sometimes a device is beyond economical repair:

• Repair — If the body is in good condition and the internals just need new seals, springs, or discs, a repair kit will sort it. Most repairs take 30-60 minutes on site.
• Replace — If the body is corroded, cracked, or the device is an obsolete model with no parts available, replacement is the way to go. We supply and install quality devices from Watts, Febco, and Wilkins.
