What Is Backflow Testing?

Backflow testing checks that your backflow prevention device is working properly — stopping contaminated water from flowing backwards into the public water supply. Every device installed on a commercial or high-risk residential property needs to be tested annually by a registered IQP (Independently Qualified Person).

This isn't optional. Auckland Council and Watercare require it. If your device hasn't been tested or has failed its last test, you could face compliance notices, fines, or disconnection of your water supply.

We're IQP certified and carry out backflow testing across Auckland — from cafes and restaurants to commercial buildings, schools, and residential properties with irrigation systems or swimming pools.

Why Backflow Testing Is Required

Backflow happens when there's a sudden pressure drop in the mains supply — a burst main, heavy fire-fighting demand, or council maintenance. Without a working preventer, contaminated water from your property (chemicals, grey water, fertiliser) can get sucked back into the public supply.

Auckland Council maintains a register of all backflow devices. If yours is on that register, you're legally required to have it tested every 12 months by a registered IQP. The results get reported directly to council.

What We Test

We test all types of backflow prevention devices:

Every test follows the Watercare-approved procedure. We record the results, issue you a test report, and submit the results to council on your behalf.

What Happens If Your Device Fails

If your backflow preventer fails its annual test, it needs to be repaired or replaced. We can usually repair on the spot — we carry common repair kits for major brands including Watts, Febco, and Wilkins.

If the device is beyond repair (corroded internals, obsolete parts), we'll quote you for a replacement and get it sorted fast. You can't leave a failed device in service — council will follow up.

Commercial vs Residential Backflow Testing

Commercial

Commercial properties usually have RPZ or DCVA devices that require more thorough testing. We work around your business hours where possible — early mornings, late afternoons, or weekends. We handle all the council paperwork so you don't have to chase it.

Residential

Residential backflow testing is typically quicker — most homes have a testable dual check valve at the boundary or an inline device near the irrigation controller. The test takes 15-20 minutes and we'll let you know straight away if there are any issues.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often does a backflow device need testing?

Every 12 months. Auckland Council and Watercare require annual testing by a registered IQP. If you miss a test, you'll get a compliance notice — and potentially a fine or water supply restriction.

What is an IQP?

An Independently Qualified Person — someone registered and certified to test backflow prevention devices. Only an IQP can carry out a valid test that council will accept. We're IQP certified.

How long does a backflow test take?

A standard test takes 15-30 minutes depending on the device type. RPZ valves take a bit longer than dual check valves. If repairs are needed, we can usually sort them on the same visit.

Do I need a backflow device on my house?

If you have an irrigation system connected to mains water, a swimming pool or spa with auto-fill, or any other cross-connection risk, then yes — council requires a testable backflow preventer. Most standard residential properties without these don't need one.

What happens if I don't get my backflow device tested?

Council will send you reminder notices, then compliance notices. If you still don't comply, they can restrict or disconnect your water supply. It's not worth the hassle — just get it tested annually and stay on the right side of the rules.
