Auckland Council and Watercare require them on all commercial water connections and many residential ones — especially properties with irrigation systems, swimming pools, or any cross-connection risk.
We install all types of backflow prevention devices across Auckland. Whether it's a new build that needs a device at the point of supply, or an existing property that's been flagged by council, we'll get the right device installed, tested, and registered.
The highest level of backflow protection. Required for high-hazard sites — food premises, chemical storage, medical facilities, car washes, and commercial laundries. RPZ valves have two check valves and a relief valve that dumps water if either check valve fails. They're larger, more expensive, and need annual testing — but they're the gold standard for protection.
Used on medium-hazard sites — commercial buildings, fire sprinkler connections, and properties with irrigation systems. Two independently operating check valves in a testable assembly. Smaller and cheaper than RPZ, but still requires annual IQP testing.
The most common residential device. Required when you have an irrigation system connected to mains, a pool or spa with auto-fill, or any other low-to-medium hazard cross-connection. Compact, affordable, and quick to install at the boundary or inline.
We keep it straightforward:
It depends on the device type and installation complexity. A testable dual check valve for a residential property is the most affordable option. RPZ valves for commercial sites cost more due to the device size and plumbing work involved. We'll give you a straight-up price before we start.
In most cases, backflow device installation is exempt from requiring a building consent under Schedule 1 of the Building Act. However, the device must be installed by a licensed plumber and registered with council. We handle the registration for you.
A standard residential installation takes 1-2 hours. Commercial RPZ installations can take half a day depending on pipe sizes and access. We'll give you a timeframe when we quote.
Yes — we need to shut off the water supply while we install the device. For residential jobs, it's usually off for about an hour. We'll let you know in advance so you can plan around it.
We test the device, issue a test report, and register it with council. From then on, it needs annual testing by an IQP — we can set up a reminder so you don't forget.
