When to Replace Your Water Filter

Water filters don't last forever. Over time, the filter media gets saturated and stops working properly. If you don't replace them on schedule, you're drinking water that isn't being filtered — and you might not even realise it.

Here's the general replacement schedule:

Sediment filters — Every 6-12 months. These catch dirt, sand, and particles. They'll slow your flow rate when they're due.
Carbon block filters — Every 6-12 months depending on usage. Carbon is what removes chlorine, taste, and odour.
Reverse osmosis membranes — Every 2-3 years. The pre and post filters in an RO system need changing every 6-12 months though.
UV lamps — Every 12 months, regardless of whether they're still glowing. UV output degrades below effective levels after a year.
UV quartz sleeves — Every 2-3 years, or when visibly clouded with mineral deposits.

Signs Your Filter Needs Replacing

Don't wait until your water tastes bad. Here are the signs to watch for:

Reduced flow rate — The most obvious sign. If your filtered tap or shower is running slower than it used to, the filter is likely blocked with sediment and needs swapping.
Change in taste or smell — If you can taste chlorine again or the water has a musty, earthy taste, the carbon filter is exhausted.
It's been more than 12 months — Even if the water seems fine, most filters should be replaced at least annually. The filter media breaks down over time and can harbour bacteria if left too long.
Discoloured water — If filtered water looks cloudy or has a yellow tint, the filter isn't doing its job anymore.
Low UV alarm — Many UV systems have an alarm or indicator light that tells you when the lamp needs replacing. Don't ignore it.

Can I replace the filter myself?

Some under-bench cartridges are designed for DIY replacement — twist off the housing, swap the cartridge, twist back on. But if you're not confident with plumbing, or if the housing is stuck or leaking, it's better to have a plumber do it. Whole house and UV systems should always be serviced by a professional.

How much does filter replacement cost?

It depends on the cartridge type and system. A basic carbon cartridge replacement is very affordable. UV lamp replacement costs a bit more due to the lamp itself. We include the cartridge, labour, and system check in our price — no surprises.

What happens if I don't replace my filter?

An overdue filter stops filtering effectively. Carbon filters become saturated and can actually release contaminants back into the water. Sediment filters block up and restrict flow. UV lamps drop below the effective dose. None of these are things you want — just get them replaced on time.
