What Is an Under-Bench Water Filter?

An under-bench filter sits in the cupboard below your kitchen sink and filters your drinking water right at the point of use. It connects to your cold water supply and feeds either through your existing kitchen tap (inline) or through a dedicated filter tap installed on the bench top.

It's the most popular way to get great-tasting filtered water without a jug filter, without buying bottled water, and without filtering your entire house supply. Just the water you actually drink and cook with.

Filter Types

Carbon block filters

The most common type. Carbon block filters remove chlorine, taste, odour, and sediment from your water. They're effective, affordable, and easy to maintain — just swap the cartridge every 6-12 months. This is what we install in most Auckland homes.

Sediment filters

If your water has visible particles or your pipes are old and throwing off rust, a sediment pre-filter catches the bigger stuff before it reaches the carbon filter. Often used as the first stage in a twin-cartridge system.

Reverse osmosis (RO)

The most thorough filtration available for residential use. RO systems remove virtually everything — chlorine, fluoride, heavy metals, nitrates, and dissolved solids. They produce very pure water but have a slower flow rate and generate some waste water. Best for people who want the purest possible drinking water.

Twin and triple cartridge systems

Multi-stage systems combine different filter types for more thorough filtration. A common setup is sediment pre-filter + carbon block. Triple systems add a third stage for finer filtration or mineralisation.

Dedicated Filter Tap vs Inline

Dedicated filter tap

A separate tap installed on your bench top — usually a slim, modern spout next to your main tap. Only filtered water comes through this tap, so your filter cartridges last longer because you're not running all your cold water through them. This is what we recommend for most installs.

Inline

The filter connects inline on your cold water supply, so all cold water through your existing tap is filtered. Simpler installation (no extra tap hole needed), but the filter cartridges wear out faster because everything runs through them — dish rinsing, filling pots, everything.

Installation Process

Installing an under-bench filter is a clean, straightforward job:

Most installations take about an hour.

Filter Replacement Schedule

Signs your filter needs replacing: reduced flow rate, change in taste, or it's been more than 12 months. We offer a scheduled replacement service so you don't have to remember.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is an under-bench filter better than a jug filter?

Much better. Under-bench filters use higher quality carbon block cartridges that remove more contaminants and last longer. You also get filtered water on demand — no waiting for a jug to fill, no fridge space taken up, and no plastic waste.

Do I need a separate tap for a water filter?

Not necessarily — you can go inline and filter all cold water through your existing tap. But a dedicated filter tap is better for most people because the cartridges last longer and you get a clear distinction between filtered and unfiltered water.

Will a filter remove fluoride?

Standard carbon filters don't remove fluoride. If you want fluoride removed, you need a reverse osmosis system or a filter with activated alumina media. We can set you up with either option.

How much does an under-bench filter cost?

A basic single-cartridge carbon system with a dedicated tap is very affordable. RO systems cost more. We'll give you a straight price including the system and installation — no hidden costs.

Can you install a filter in a rental property?

Yes — as long as the landlord is OK with it. A dedicated tap requires drilling a hole in the bench, so you'll want landlord approval for that. An inline system doesn't modify the bench top and is easier to remove later.
