The short answer

LPG bottle disconnection in Auckland does not involve Vector because LPG is private supply. A certifying gasfitter caps the internal pipework and issues the Gas Safety Certificate. The LPG supplier (Rockgas, Elgas, Genesis Energy, or BOC) collects the bottles. Total time is 3 to 7 days. Total cost is $400 to $700 incl GST. Replacement heat pump hot water installed is $6,399 to $8,299 incl GST. A standard electric storage cylinder is $2,499 to $4,999 incl GST.

LPG vs Natural Gas Disconnection

If your property has gas bottles outside the house (not a meter at the boundary), you are on LPG. The disconnection process is different from natural gas:

The LPG Disconnection Process

1. Phone your LPG supplier

Common Auckland LPG suppliers: Rockgas, Elgas, Genesis Energy, BOC, Nova Energy. Tell them you are disconnecting permanently and ask them to collect the bottles. Most include collection in your account at no charge if there is no outstanding rental balance. You may also be able to drop bottles back to a depot.

2. We attend site for decommissioning

A certifying gasfitter visits — usually within a few days of you calling us. We:

3. LPG supplier collects the bottles

Your LPG supplier collects the bottles within a few days. Once they are picked up, the disconnection is complete.

4. Install your electric replacement (optional, recommended same visit)

If you are switching to electric or heat pump hot water, we can install it the same day — saving a second call-out fee.

What It Costs

Our gasfitting rate is $155 plus GST for the first hour, then $100 plus GST per hour after that. A typical LPG decommissioning takes 2 to 4 hours including the Gas Safety Certificate.

After-hours emergency callouts: $295 plus GST for the first hour. Public holidays: $395 plus GST for the first hour.

Adding a replacement heat pump hot water cylinder (recommended for LPG conversions — biggest running cost savings): $6,399 to $8,299 incl GST installed.

Which Auckland Areas Use LPG

If you are in one of these suburbs, you are almost certainly on LPG rather than natural gas:

Beachlands Maraetai Clevedon Whitford Other rural areas

The Vector natural gas network covers most of urban Auckland but stops at the boundary of these semi-rural and coastal suburbs. If you are unsure whether your property is on natural gas or LPG, look outside: gas bottles outside the house = LPG. A meter on the boundary fence = natural gas. If you have natural gas instead of LPG, see our natural gas disconnection guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to disconnect LPG in Auckland?

Total cost is typically $400 to $700 incl GST for the decommissioning side. Adding a replacement heat pump hot water system brings the all-in cost to about $6,800 to $9,000 incl GST. Bottle return to the LPG supplier is usually free.

How long does LPG disconnection take?

Much faster than natural gas — usually 3 to 7 days. No network operator (Vector) involvement is required because LPG bottles are private supply. The certifying gasfitter completes the decommissioning, issues the Gas Safety Certificate, and the supplier collects the bottles.

Do I need to return the LPG bottles to the supplier?

Yes. LPG bottles are usually leased from the supplier (Rockgas, Elgas, Genesis Energy, BOC). Phone them to arrange collection — typically free if there is no rental balance owing. We can coordinate this if needed.

What's the difference between LPG and natural gas disconnection?

Natural gas is a piped utility owned by Vector — they must remove the meter and cut the riser, which takes 4 to 6 weeks. LPG is a private bottle supply — no network operator involvement. The certifying gasfitter can do the whole job in one visit. LPG disconnection is typically half the cost and one-tenth the time.

Which Auckland suburbs are typically on LPG rather than natural gas?

Beachlands, Maraetai, Whitford, Clevedon, Kingseat, and rural lifestyle blocks outside the Vector natural gas network. Some semi-rural properties in Pukekohe and Drury are also on LPG. If you have gas bottles outside your house rather than a meter, you are on LPG.

What if I want to keep the LPG for the cooktop but disconnect everything else?

Partial disconnection is possible. We cap the supply lines to the appliances being removed (typically gas hot water and gas heaters) while leaving the cooktop supply in service. A Gas Safety Certificate is issued for the partial work. This is a common arrangement for households moving to heat pump hot water but keeping the gas cooktop.
