Signs Your Hot Water Needs Repair

• No hot water at all — the most common call we get. Could be a tripped breaker, dead element, failed thermostat, or gas ignition fault. We diagnose on the spot.
• Water not hot enough or fluctuating — usually a thermostat issue on electric cylinders, or a flow sensor problem on gas units. Quick fix in most cases.
• Running out of hot water quickly — one of the two elements in your cylinder may have failed, meaning only half the tank is heating. We test and replace same day.
• Water pooling under the cylinder — could be the pressure relief valve weeping (repairable) or the tank itself corroding through (replacement needed). Don't ignore this one.
• Rusty or discoloured hot water — the anode rod has failed and the tank is corroding from the inside. If caught early, an anode replacement can extend the cylinder's life. If not, it needs replacing before it bursts.
• Rumbling, banging, or popping sounds — sediment buildup on the element. Flushing the cylinder can help, but if it has been years, the element may need replacing.
• Power tripping when the cylinder turns on — a short circuit in the element or wiring fault. Needs diagnosing before resetting the breaker.
• Error code on your gas unit — Rinnai, Rheem, and Bosch continuous flow units display error codes when something is wrong. We know the codes and carry common parts.

Electric Cylinder Repairs

Most Auckland homes have an electric hot water cylinder — typically a 135L or 180L low-pressure unit, or a newer mains-pressure system. Common repairs we do every week:

• Element replacement — the heating element is the part that fails most often. We carry common sizes and can usually replace same day.
• Thermostat replacement — controls the water temperature. When it fails, you get water that is too hot, not hot enough, or not heating at all.
• Pressure relief valve (TPR valve) — if this is dripping constantly, it may need replacing. If it is blowing off regularly, there could be a pressure or temperature issue that needs investigating.
• Anode rod replacement — the sacrificial anode protects the tank from corrosion. Replacing it every 5 years can double the life of your cylinder.
• Leaking cylinder — if water is coming from the tank itself (not a valve or fitting), the cylinder has corroded through and needs replacing. We can usually do this same day or next day.

Gas Hot Water Repairs

Gas califonts and continuous flow units need a certified gasfitter — not just a plumber. We are both, so we handle the full system.

• Ignition faults — unit not firing, clicking but no flame, or flame cutting out. Could be the igniter, flame rod, gas valve, or PCB board.
• Error codes — Rinnai Infinity, Rheem, Bosch, and Paloma units all display fault codes. We diagnose on-site and carry common replacement parts.
• Temperature fluctuations — hot-cold-hot pattern is usually a flow sensor or water valve issue. Common on older units.
• Low hot water flow — often a scaled-up heat exchanger, especially in areas with hard water. Can sometimes be flushed, otherwise the exchanger needs replacing.
• Gas leaks — smell gas near your hot water unit? Turn it off, open windows, and call us immediately. We find and fix gas leaks and issue the required gas certificate.
• Pilot light issues — older gas storage cylinders with standing pilots can have thermocouple failures. We replace and re-light.
